Story continues below ↓The University of Utah Health Sciences clinical team and the Utah Telehealth Network have selected the company’s advanced telehealth solutions to support the Utah Remote Monitoring Project, said Zachary Madrigal, director of Southwestern Region at Authentidate.
Authentidate will provide the project with an Electronic House Call (EHC) remote monitoring device, remote monitoring kiosk device and IVR telehealth solutions made available through its ExpressMD Solutions joint venture company.
“UTN is a mature telehealth network connecting hospitals, clinics and health departments, said Dr. Marta Petersen, director of Utah Telehealth Network and vice-chair for the Department of Dermatology at University of Utah School of Medicine.
For a growing variety of telemedicine programs, UTN provides support and aims to positively impact patient outcomes and contribute to ongoing healthcare redesign and payment reform efforts in Utah, Dr. Petersen said, adding that this project will implement new methods for chronic disease management for patients in rural and urban Utah.
In addition to a centralized care coordinator, the scope of the Utah Remote Monitoring pilot project includes four clinics requiring concurrent monitoring of 15-20 patients each, and two additional locations to pilot the kiosk-based systems for 30 concurrent patients each.
Moreover, project directors also anticipate acquiring a care manager workstation, 60-80 patient home units, two Kiosks and 15-20 IVR patients, all dependent on finalization during implementation.
“The Utah Remote Monitoring Project will allow patients to have access to quality health care nearer their homes,” said Donna Singer, CEO of the Utah Navajo Health System.
Authentidate’s remote patient monitoring solutions bring personalized care to patients in their homes. An easy-to-use in-home, touchscreen remote monitoring device, EHC provides scheduled care plan reminders. In addition, it also allows patients to enter their own vital signs.
The remote monitoring kiosk performs the same functions as EHC for multiple patients from a single common location like a clinic or school, according to company officials.
Using the EHC, the IVR solution, or the kiosk solution, clinicians can remotely monitor their patients’ vital signs and gather additional pertinent information about their patients' health to supplement in-person visits.
Plus, they can also review their patients’ remote monitoring session results securely using the secure web-based application and remotely manage or adjust their patients’ care plans, medication reminders and related information. Company officials said that clinicians can also use the EHC to provide disease-specific education to their patients in real-time.

Basic digital literacy here means more than the mere operation of a computer and communicating via email or social networking. It implies being able to use ICT to improve present lives in ways shaped by the realities of environments and needs. For women agricultural workers, it may mean producing more and selling at better prices with helpful market information. For home-based women, it may mean becoming a homepreneur, finding livelihood opportunities that increase productivity and family income. For those on the balance beam between family and career, it will mean being able to work from home and fulfill the multiple roles of homemaker and co-provider.
For millions of women, digital literacy is the lifeline to a new future – a lifeline which a new global campaign seeks to cast in all corners of the world. This is the Telecentre Women: Digital Literacy Campaign of global telecentre leader, telecentre.org.
The Telecentre WomanThe Telecentre Woman comes from or is linked to the grassroots. This campaign views her in two perspectives:
- She is the telecentre manager or knowledge worker who ensures telecentre services, encourages wider use of the telecentre in the community, and adopts resource maintenance and generation approaches to bring in local and external resources for telecentre sustainability.
- She is the community woman, with or without formal education or even functional literacy, who is a telecentre user or a potential user. COMPACT HIGH-POWER LASER PROGRAM COMPLETES KEY MILESTONE
Enemy surface-to-air threats to manned and unmanned aircraft have become increasingly sophisticated, creating a need for rapid and effective response to this growing category of threats. A potential solution for countering these threats is high-powered lasers, which can harness the speed and power of light to counter multiple threats. But these lasers need to be lighter and require less space than current state-of-the-art for use on many of today’s air assets. The goal of DARPA’s High-Energy Liquid Laser Area Defense System (HELLADS) is to develop a 150 kilowatt (kW) laser weapon system that is ten times smaller and lighter than current lasers of similar power, enabling integration onto tactical aircraft to defend against and defeat ground threats.
DARPA recently completed laboratory testing of a fundamental building block for HELLADS, a single laser module that successfully demonstrated the ability to achieve high power and beam quality from a significantly lighter and smaller laser.
“Successful testing of the single laser module is a major accomplishment,” said Richard Bagnell, DARPA’s HELLADS program manager. “Advances in diodes, cooling, lightweight electronics, pumps, optics, and metal structures have made shrinking the size and weight possible without losing laser effectiveness.”
The program now enters the final development phase where a second laser module will be built and combined with the first module to generate 150 kW of power. The goal is to have the 150 kW laser completed by the end of 2012.
Following the final development phase, plans call for the laser to be transported to White Sands Missile Range in the early-2013 timeframe for ground testing against rockets, mortars, surface-to-air missiles and to conduct simulated air-to-ground offensive missions.
DARPA is also in discussion with the Air Force about transitioning the technology to conduct an airborne demonstration following the ground testing phase.

Print Version Sponsored By Researchers have uncovered a sophisticated and decentralized botnet that combines encryption and rootkit capabilities to make it practically invisible to infected machines.
The TDL-4 bootkit infects the master boot record on a computer so that it can launch before the operating system even starts, making it invisible to the operating system and antivirus software, Sergey Golovanov, a malware researcher at Kaspersky Lab, wrote June 27 on the SecureList blog. While MBR-malware is nothing new, TDL-4 has a number of unique capabilities, including an encryption algorithm that hides the botnet's communications from network traffic analysis tools.
A variant of TDSS, which has been around since 2008, TDL-4 appears to be an upgrade of the previous version TDL-3. The botnet's command-and-control servers can communicate with its army using an encrypted method to hide what it's doing from network monitors. The customized encryption algorithm appears to use the domain names of the C&C servers as the encryption keys, according to Golovanov's analysis.
TDL-4 "is one of the most technologically sophisticated and most complex to analyze malware," Golovanov wrote.
Unlike Rustock, Coreflood or a number of other botnets, TDL-4 doesn't rely overmuch on centralized C&C servers to pass instructions to its zombie army. The zombies can also pass along instructions to other machines using a public Kad peer-to-peer network if the servers are for some reason unavailable, creating a "decentralized server-less botnet," said Golovanov.
TDL is often found on adult content sites, bootleg Websites, and video and file storage services, according to Golovanov. Once a computer is infected with TLD-4, the malware downloads and installs other malicious software such as adware and spambots and hides those from security software as well.
Since TDL-4 loads when the computer is booting, before the operating system launches and lives in the master boot record on the hard drive, it's difficult for antivirus software to detect the malware. In the first three months of 2011, it infected 4,524,488 computers around the world. Approximately a third of them are based in the United States.
"Nothing is impossible. But they can definitely try to make it very hard," Roel Schouwenberg, senior antivirus researcher at Kasperksy Lab, told eWEEK. The malware also has low-level access to the system since it loads before the operating system, he said.
There appears to be no infected machines in Russia. This may be because the affiliate programs don't get paid for infecting computers located in Russia, according to Golovanov. There are nearly 60 C&C servers around the world, but the IP addresses appear to be "constantly changing," Golovanov said.
In order to ensure that the botnet owners don't lose control of the zombies to a competing botnet, the rootkit has its own version of an antivirus program to scan for other types of malware that may be downloaded to the computer. It can detect and delete about 20 of the most prolific packages, including Gbot and Zeus.
"The owners of TDL are essentially trying to create an 'indestructible' botnet that is protected against attacks, competitors and antivirus companies," Golovanov wrote.
Nothing is ever indestructible in the security world, but the botnet's level of complexity and sophistication assures the botnet owners a profitable operation for now while security vendors try to figure out a defense. An affiliate can earn anywhere from $20 to $200 for every 1,000 machines it helps infect with TDL, according to Golovanov.
Cyber-criminals are also offering a $100-a-month service to create proxy servers using infected machines, along with a Firefox add-on to make it easy to toggle between proxies within the browser.
Other features include a driver to run on 64-bit systems and a module to fraudulently manipulate advertising systems and search engines using fake click and traffic techniques.
Proving that even cyber-criminals can make mistakes, Kaspersky researchers found bugs in the code, allowing them access to three different MySQL databases located in Moldova, Lithuania, and the U.S. to determine how many machines had been infected. The bugs are also helping researchers investigate the creators.
